Yew Trees and Hedge Plants

Planting a Yew Tree Hedge

Planting Yew for a hedge is best carried out in spring or autumn. Yew will grow well if the planting hole is prepared by digging over well before planting and ensuring good drainage. Adding manure and compost to the planting hole is fine but remmeber to do this a few weeks before planting.

Set out a planting line and choose nice plants with good shape. Plant at 2ft centres and water in well with a liquid seaweed fertilizer. As usual mulch well to keep a cool root run and suppress weeds.

Pruning is best carried out summer or early autumn, it is better to prune regularly when young to encourage a nice bushy habit. Try not to prune to late in autumn so as to give any new growth a chance to toughen up before frosts arrive.

And yes you can let it grow into a tree if you like, long lived. When planting just make sure that drainage is good, like most plants they do not like the roots to be waterlogged.
