How to grow Buxus sempervirens

Buxus sempervirens or ' English Box' is a small leafed box with dense foliage. Like many buxus species, Buxus sempervirens can grow to 5m when not trimmed. Buxus sempervirens Suffruticosa is a smaller growing cultivar. Buxus sempervirens or english box is widely used in topiary ans well as for low hedging.

Buxus sempervirens likes a well drained soil. Space plants at 4-5 plants per metre. So plant 20cm (8inches) apart.


If growing from plugs or small plants it is usual to leave plants to establish for 2-3 years before clipping back to the desired shape and size. Start by clipping the box plant tops back to 5 - 6 cm below the desired height. This can be done in the growing season (mid summer).
