Dichelostemma

Dichelostemma capitatum 'Blue Dick' and Dichelostemma Ida-Maia 'Firecracher flower' are two popular species of these bulbous plants from the USA.

Long lasting flowers and drought tolerant these attractive bulbs make an excellent plant for the rock garden and perform equally well in containers.

Dichelostemma Ida-Maia 'Firecracher flower' is the most interesting with red cigar shaped flowers with yellow to green tips. When in flower this plant will reach a height of nearly 1m.

Care

A sunny position protected from frosts and a well drained soil is essential.

Winter drainage is critical in the UK and we suggest growing in containers in a greenhouse.

• Dichelostemma congestum including the cultivar 'Pink Diamond' is also worth a place in the garden.
