Bamboo Plants For Sale

Bamboo plants sold in the UK need to be hardy varieties for use as garden plants, especially in the cooler areas. Bamboo is widely used for growing in the garden or pots in the UK come and a number of forms, clumping bamboo and running bamboo are the two main types. Often used as a screening plant or hedge, bamboo is fast growing and can be an excellent landscaping feature.

We are all used to the tall growing species, however, miniature, weeping and giant bamboo are both available as are green stemmed and blue bamboo. Black bamboo is increasingly popular for its architectural characteristics, Phyllostachys Nigra being one species of black bamboo. Weeping species are becoming very popular.

Where to grow bamboo

Bamboo can be grown in pots as a feature and bamboo can be useful as a screening plant or hedge. Given enough light and good air circulation bamboo can also be grown indoors. Cold climate bamboo are the most popular species for the UK. Clumping bamboos are more widely used than running bamboo species

Varieties

For growing in containers look for smaller growing species and cultivars such as some of the Fargesia and Phyllostachys types.

If you are considering planting in the ground a root barrier can be advisable to make control much easier.

Varieties such as Himalayan Weeping Bamboo (Drepanostachyum falcatum) and Slender Weavers Bamboo (Bambusa textilis var. gracilis) are very attractive varieties for containers.
