Cucumbers like a sunny position in a well drained humus rich soil, they can be grown from seeds or plugs (seedlings) and can be started in a greenhouse or coldframe for best results.
Cucumber varieties
Varieties include specific types for salads and pickling, and or course the 'burpless' varieties.
- Regal and Saladin cucumbers are two of the favourite varieties for pickling.
- Varieties such as Marketmore, Fanfare and Spacemaster are used for salads.
Growing Cucumbers
Cucumbers are really a summer crop so plant seedlings in late spring after the risk of frosts is over.
Plant on mounds of hilled soil. Or try from seeds, sown in early spring in a greenhouse, try them in a hanging pot.
Remember that cucumbers are 90% water, so keep well watered.
