Perennial Phlox (Phlox paniculata) are colourful hardy plant with masses of fragrant flowers and are originally from North America. Well suited to growing in the garden and can be used as a tall edging or border plant or in rock gardens but better suited to a mid point in the garden border.
- Phlox subulata is known as the 'creeping phlox' or 'moss plox' with Phlox subulata 'tamanonagalei' being a popular cultivar. 'Red wings', Amazing Grace and 'Purple Beauty' are other to look for.
- Phlox paniculata is the upright form, sweet smelling flowers, bees and birds love them. Again lots of cultivars, 'Blue Paradise' has flowers that open a pale blue, quickly turning to a deeper blue. P. paniculata 'David' has pure white flowers in large clusters, a strong disese resistant cultivar that has many admirers.
These are tall growing plant to nearly 1m that are attractive to beed and butterflies when in flower. Try a sunny position in a humus rich well drained soil, full sun is best and morning sun is excellent as it dries the plants out and helps prevent powdery mildew which can be a problem.
Plants can be cut back to just above ground level and divided in late autumn or winter and replanted.
