Ilex x meserveae 'Blue Angel'

Also known as the 'Blue Holly' , Ilex x meserveae 'Blue Angel' is a compact bushy evergreen shrub with brilliantly glossy blue green leaves. The stems have a purple color, and in autumn the female plant is a real highlight with contrasting bright red berries against the stunning green foliage.

Reach around 2m in height the foliage is spiny and the plant makes an excellent low growing hedge. You will need another holly nearby for pollination, look for 'Blue Prince'.

All meserveae hollies are called blue holies, they are a hybrid between Ilex rugosa and Ilex aquifolium. Very cold hardy and almost maintenance free.

Landscaping uses

Excellent as an evergreen hedge where its attractive dense foliage adds to the garden. Used widely as a feature plants where the glossy blue green spiny foliage is attractive all year round with the added interest of the red berried in autumn. Also suited to growing in containers.

Care

Plant in a humus rich moist but well drained soil, water well over the first summers with a liquid seaweed fertiliser. After 2 - 3 years and a good root system has developed, Ilex x meserveae 'Blue Angel' will require little to no care.

Pruning is generally not required.
