Salvia pratensis

Is a perennial plant also known as 'clarry sage', 'meadow sage' and 'meadow clary'. A hardy upright plant reaching around 1m or 3ft.

Lots of cultivars of this easy to grow and useful garden plant. S pratensis 'Rose Rhapsody' is a popular pink flowering variety that is a little shorter growing than the species to around .5m, flowering in spring to summer it makes a great addition to the border. S pratensis 'Twilight Seranade' has deeper blue flowers and again will reach around .5m. S pratensis 'Indigo'has violet flowers and is closer to the species in final height.

Growing conditions and care

Like most salvias 'clarry sage' prefers full sun and a humus rich well drained soil, attractive to butterflies and birds, little care is needed. Plants can be cut back in autumn. In full sun the plant presents few problems, in damp shaded positions it may be subject to mildew and rot.
