Scabiosa Plant Profile and Growing Hints

Scabiosa are an evergreen perennial, sun to part shade, well drained soil rich in humus. Mulch well to retain moisture. Scabiosa grow in a clump 30cm by 30cm. Scabiosa are frost tolerant, come in a broad range of colours and can make a good cut flower.


Scabiosa species include S.columbaria and S.atropurpurea.

Scabiosa columbaria is a perennial species with nice purple flowers, S.atropurpurea is an annual species that can be grown from seed.

Scabiosa cultivars including Scabiosa caucasica 'Blue Perfection' a tall growing plant with blue flowers, and Scabiosa atropurpurea ' Beaujolais Bonnets' with classic deep burgandy flowers are a great addition to the garden border. Scabiosa caucasica Goldingensis is another worth looking for.
