Baptisia australis

Baptisia australis is the Blue Wild Indigo and is an excellent perennial for a warm sunny position. Native to North America it is a plant that will attract bees and butterflies to the garden. It aslo adds some height to the border, reaching around 1m in height.

Flowering early in the season the blue pea like flowers rise on spikes above the foliage.

You will need a sunny position and a well drained soil to grow Baptisia australis. They do not require a rich soil and rarely require fertilizer.

These are fully hardy and will form a clump over time which can be lifted and divided in late winter to early spring, however it is best grown fron seed as it is another of those plants that seems to resent being disturbed.

We like to prune back in late winter as well, the seed pods are attractive through the dull winter.
